Electrical Safety During Storms: Protecting Your Home & Family

Monsoon season is coming, and when a storm rolls in, it’s essential to prioritize electrical safety to safeguard your home, loved ones, and valuable electronics/appliances.

1. Stay Informed
Keep an eye on weather forecasts and alerts. If a severe storm is expected, prepare in advance.
Unplug sensitive electronics and appliances before the storm hits.

2. Avoid Water and Wet Areas
Never touch electrical outlets, switches, or appliances with wet hands.
Stay away from flooded areas where electrical lines may be submerged.

3. Use Surge Protectors
Invest in surge protectors for your electronic devices and appliances. These devices can absorb excess voltage during power surges caused by lightning strikes.
Install whole-house surge protectors to safeguard your entire electrical system.

4. Turn Off Appliances
Turn off and unplug major appliances during a storm. This includes TVs, computers, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
Leave one light switch on to indicate when power is restored.

5. Avoid Corded Phones
Use cordless phones or mobile phones during storms. Corded phones can conduct electricity if lightning strikes the phone lines.

6. Stay Indoors
Avoid going outside during a lightning storm. Lightning can strike trees, power lines, and buildings.
If you’re caught outdoors, seek shelter in a sturdy building or a car (with windows rolled up).

7. Generator Safety
If you have a backup generator, follow safety guidelines:
Never operate it indoors (including garages or basements) due to carbon monoxide risk.
Keep generators away from doors, windows, and vents.
Plug appliances directly into the generator using heavy-duty extension cords.

8. Inspect Your Electrical System
Regularly check your home’s electrical system for signs of wear or damage.
Look for frayed wires, loose connections, or exposed cables.

9. Have Emergency Supplies Ready
Keep flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio handy.
Create an emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, and first aid supplies.

10. Call a Professional
If you suspect damage to your electrical system after a storm, call a licensed electrician.
Avoid any DIY repairs, especially during hazardous conditions.

Remember, electrical safety during storms is critical for preventing fires, injuries, and damage to your home. Stay informed, take precautions, and prioritize the well-being of your family and property. ⛈️⚡
